Orders for papers may also be left with him. FOOTBALL SMOKE CONCERT. STRATFORD JUNIORS' SUCCESS. July 27. A very successful smoke concert, to celebrate the success of the Stratford junior football team in the central division, was held in the supper room at the Town Hall last night under the direction of Mr. Campbell Jackson. The chairman of the Stratford Football Club, Mr. R. F. Harkness, presided over a gathering of about ninety. All the clubs in the central division, with the exception of Inglewood, were represented to do honor to the winners of the j junior central division competitions. An . apology was received from Mr. R. Masters, MJ*. During the evening the chairman presented handsome medals to Mr. A. Cameron (for the best all-round player in the team, donated by Mr. W. Dar ragh), to Mr. P. Casey (for the best forward, presented by Mr. C. Jackson), and to Mr. F. Collins (for the best back, presented by Mr. J. W. Boon). A | set of brushes was presented to Mr. C. Johnson for being the most consistent attender at practice and most enthusiastic member (presented by Messrs. Rawles and Rawles and Mr. A. Manoy). A long toast list was discussed, and an enjoyable musical programme was rendered by Messrs. Robinson, P. Aitken. |J. H. Thompson. P. Healy, G. T. Walters, B. Vinsen, P. Casey and T. Wilson, Mr. W. Darragh contributing stories Mr. J. H. Thompson was at the piano. Following the loyal toast, the “Rugby Union” was proposed by Mr. D. J. Ma- . lone, who said it was essential in all sport that they should have a strong governing body. It would be agreed that the Rugby Union carried out its duties in a very satisfactory manner and for the good of the whole province. Occasionally individual clubs or members might become parochial and consider the action of the union a little arbitrary, but it must be remembered that the union was working for the benefit of the province as a whole. He congratulated the junior team on their success in winning the central division competition. A first-class ground would shortly be provided in Victoria Park, in the centre of the town, and this should prove a great advantage to the game in Stratford. The A. and P. grounds were so far away from the tnwn that only real enthusiasts attended the matches, and the club suffered accordingly. Responding. Mr. R. F. Harkness said Mr. Malone was a power that was felt behind the Rugby Union, and he was glad that he had not retired wholly from it. Mr. Harkness agreed that the grounds should receive more attention. “The Stratford First Junior Team” was proposed by Mr. W. Darragh, who congratulated them on the success they had achieved and the clean and sporting manner in which they had played. Right through the season not a single player had been warned or ordered off the field. Mr. C. Lamplough. captain of the team, responded. thanking the speakers for their appreciative remarks. Many other toasts were honored.

A RESIDENCE BURNED A fire occurred on the Pembroke Road at about two o’clock yesterday morning, totally destroying a six-roomed residence owned by Mr. J. P. Hickey and occupied by Mr. W. Hine. The insurance on the house amounted to £450 in the State Office, and the contents were insured for £lOO. Practically nothing was saved. FOOTBALL AND “THE CLOTH.” Tn proposing the toast of the Stratford Football Club at last night’s smoke concert in honor of the Stratford juniors’ success. Mr. D. J. Malone referred to the influence the Rev. J. W. McKenzie had had on the Stratford footballers since he joined, their ranks. He said the advent of Mr. McKenzie had been a great blessing to the team. Some people thought there was a certain lewdness in clergymen joining in football, but he thought that if more of them would join in sport with the young men instead of preaching on the lines that some of them did they would get much better results. Mr. McKenzie’s popularity with the players was demonstrated when the chairman of last night’s function read a letter from Mr. McKenzie thanking the footballers for their p esentation of a watch, chain, sovereign case and fountain pen to replace similar articles stolen from Mr. McKenzie’s clothes during a match some time ago. GENERAL ITEMS. As the result of a motor accident it is understood Mr. L. J. Petch, of Ross Road, is now in a private hospital in Inglewood, suffering from wounds on the head. It is stated that Messrs. Petch, W. Summers. P. Kennedy, and J. Jackson were motoring from the Midhirst dairy factory meeting on Monday in a car owned by Jackson, and near Tariki the ear crashed into a bank, all the passengers receiving minor injuries. The car was considerably damaged. “The game makes men." said Mr. Robert Wood at the footballers’ smoke concert last night when responding to the toast of “The Stratford Club.” As an illustration of this he said that nine members of Stratford’s 1x914l x 914 team volunteered for active service in the Main Body, and of these six were still lying in the fields of Gallipoli and France.
