A GREAT COMPOSER.
LECTURE ON SCHUBERT. The great composer Schubert formed the subject of an illustrated lecture delivered by Mr. R. H. Rockel. ALA., at St. Andrew’s Hail, New Plymouth, last night. There -was a good attendance of music lovers, who listened with interest to the lecturer and to the various interpretations given of Schubert’s works. Interesting details were given of the composer’s works, 1200 in all, which included songs, cantatas, operas, piano music, waltzes, etc., quartettes and symphonies. Schubert had only a slight education and had been criticised in some quarters as being too prolix. He, of course, used the same theme several times, but his varying moods were portrayed and contrasted in his different works, the rendering of which were given by the assistin vocalists and by means of gramophone records. During his life-time Sdhubert was utterly unknown and unrecognised and died in poverty. His earnings totalled only £2ll. Schubert's songs represented all moods, but none were written in virtuoso or Italian s>tyle. The songs allowed only for a small range of voice; apart from the compositions themselves the words were also always good. Those who assisted in illustrating the lecture by renderings of some of the works were Alessrs. ,F. P. Fredric, W. L. Hay, and R. *L. Cooper, Airs. Fredric assisting at the piano. Other items w’ere given on Mr. W. J. Chaney’s very fine gramophone. The programme included the following compositions: “To Music,”
“Ave Maria,” “Wanderer,” “Young Nun,” “Death and the Maiden,” “Rosamunds Overture,” “Rosamunde entr’ acte,” and unfinished symphony, “Serenade,” “Erl King.” “Mock Suris,” “Who is Sylvia?” “Hark! the Lark,” “Linder Tree” and “Hedge Roses.” The proceeds of the lecture were in aid of the Presbyterian manse building fund.
