RAILWAY FATALITY
MAN KILLED NEAR PATEA. As reported yesterday, a fatality occurred on the railway line near Patea on Tuesday night shortly .before 6 o’clock, resulting in the death of a man apparently between 60 and 70 years of age whose identity is at present unknown. It appears that the deceased was at the refreshonent rooms at the Patea station whilst the 5 o’clock mail train was an and took no notice when the warning “Seats please” was given. Immediately the mail train drew ou£, howi ever, he left the station and proceeded up the line towards Kakaramea. He must have walked at a fairly rapid rate, for he had reached within a mile of thle Pariroa Pah station when he was met by the 6 p.m. train from Hawera, the engine of which struck him on the forehead, killing him instantly. The train was immediately pulled up and the deceased brought into Patea. where he was examined by Dr. Simmons, who could only pronounce life to he extinct. On searching him nothing but a railway ticket to Stratford, a few shillings and a P.O. Savings Bank receipt with no name to it were found on him.— Press.
Investigations by the Stratford police regarding the identity of the old man who was killed at the Patea railway station on Tuesday night have so far proved unsuccessful. The man had in his possession a. railway ticket from Thorndon to Stratford and his clothing borne an indistinct name which is apparenlty “Fear” dr “McFear.”
