THE PUBLIC SERVICE.

CONTROL BY COMMISSIONER. SEVERE CRITICISM PASSED. By Telegraph.— Preas Association. Wellington, Last Night. Speaking in the House to-night, the Hon. J. A. Hanan (Invercargill) criticised the administration of the public service commissioner. He said there was differentiation in the puniahmenta meted out under the commissioner’s control, and there was a feeling that no one employed outside Wellington had a chance of promotion. There w&fl waste iu the management of State enterprises, because there was no proper control. Mr. Hanan said it was analogous that the commissioner should retire public servants on account of age when he himself was past the retiring age. Another man had been made assistant commissioner who had escaped going to the war. It was no wonder we ware losing control over the public service, which control should be restored to Ministers and to Parliament.
