ATHLETICS

1 AN AMATEUR DISOUALIFIED feERIOUS CHARGES MADE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. C. M. Walden, a well-known amateur runner, appeared before the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to-night to answer charges of having, on various occasions between October and March, in Australia, competed at athletic meetings under an assumed name. Walden denied the allegations, but after an inquiry had been held by the centre he was declared to have forfeited his amateur status. A lady, whose name the chairman requested should not be published, gave evidence as to having seen Walden running at the Nigat meeting of the Victory Athletic Club, Marybrinong. near Melbourne, on February 9. Walden had run on that occasion, she said, in a cash event under the name of Q. Wallis. Walden flatly contradicted the lady’s statement, and declared he had never run in any event in Australia, either amateur or professional. The chairman produced a letter from the secretary of the Victory Athletic Proprietary, Ltd., who stated Walden had run on the proprietary ground out of Melbourne, and had, he believed, also run at Stawell. The chairman said 'that uqder the centre's decision Walden would now be debarred from competing in any amateur athletic event in the world.
