FARM AND DAIRY.

DAIRY PRODUCE. VALUE AND VOLUME. The New Zealand Dairyman has compiled returns of British imports of butter and cheese from New Zealand from 1599 to 1922. They also show the prices realised for the produce, and, incidentally show herw great over a comparatively few years the trade has become. New Zealand cheese imported, for instance, in 1899 was 1474 tons. The average top price realised for the season was 47s 3d per cwt. for Canadian, which is quoted because the prices for New Zealand cheese were not obtainable for the period 1899 to 1908, as it was then too insignificant a factor in total consumption*. However in 1909 New 'Zealand cheese was imported to the quantity of 16.572 tons, and the average top price then was 62s lOd. Tn 1918 the quantity was 35,417 tons, and the price had risen to 130 s per cwt.; in 1918, 37,347 tons, at 155 s 4d; 1920, 77.851 tons, 1545; in 1921, 68,512 tons, 1545; in 1922, year ending March 31, 68,266 tons, average price to come. ’/ . New Zealand'butter imports byGneat Britain are shown to have grown from 4528 tons in 1899 to 39.899 tons in 1922. The price in 1899 was 104 s. steadily rising until 1904, when it fell to 99s lid. Next year it averaged 104 s sd. and steadily rose, with some small setbacks, until 1921 closed with an average top price of 189 s sd. The Dairyman shows how the demand for New Zealand butter in Great Britain must continue, for in 1914 Denmark sent to England 90,000 tons of butter, whereas the probable quantity in’ 1922 will be 45,000 tons; France in 1914 sent 11,000 tons, in 1922 none: Russia in 1914, sent 11,000 tons, in 1922, none; Sweden in 1914. 18,000 tons, in 1922. none: or a total shortage of 114.000 tons from Continental sources of supply.
