WELLINGTON TRAMWAYS.
HEARING OF THE DISPUTE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. ' Wellington, July 24. The Wellington tramway dispute came before the Conciliation Council to-day, Mr. W. Newton (Conciliation Commissioner) presiding. The union was cited by the City Council under the Arbitration Act, the position being that the council want the wages of tramwaymen to be fixed by the court in the same way as for other workers. The council wanted the 5s reduction, as fixed by the court, to apply to tramwaymen, and asked for an alteration in conditions. The union assessors contended that the council was asking for a greater reduction than 5s per week, seeing that in some cases the decrease would amount to at least 18s. Mr. W. A. W. Grenfell, agent for the City Council, considered that the tramwaymen had no cause for complaint in being placed on the same level as other workmen. The assessors for the union held that Mr. Grenfell, being secretary of the Wellington Employers’ Association, had no right to express opinions on bahalf of the workers. A motion to go into committee was defeated and points in the dispute are being discussed seriatim.
