FAITH IN AN ENEMY.
DYING SOLDIER’S MESSAGE. LETTER FROM A GERMAN. • During the war many a dying soldier’s last wishes were breathed to an enemy. Just how one German is doing his best to carry out an Auckland soldier’s wishes is disclosed in a communication encloses a translation of a letter received from a German soldier as follows: “During the war in 1917 we were engaged against New Zealand troops near Arnientieres. North of France. A New Zealand soldier, who was mortally wounded, handed to me a Prayer Book, with the wish that I should give it to his nearest relations and tell them his dying words. Not knowing the English language well. I take it that, was what he meant. Unfortunately, he had no identification disc or post cards on him. No doubt this soldier’s name was listed among the missing, but I can give his relations exact information as to where he fell in battle and where he is buried. J have also a photograph of the battlefield and of his grave. Later on I fought on the Russian front, and did not return until late in the war. Tt is only now that I have secured by kit-bag. and am able to see to the matter and try to carry out the dying man’s wish.” The letter from the High Commissioner is dated in November last, and as neither the hook nor the details as to the grave have been received, the Minister for Defence has. written to the High Commissioner for further information.
