4TH BATTALION BAND.

THE ANNUAL REPORT. The following is the report of tljc committee of the Fourth Battalion Wellington Regiment (Taranaki Rifles) Band for the past year, which is to be presented at the annual mbhtThe band has played out no leisPthan 69 times, including four military functions and four military funerals. During the’ year the band has been attached to’ the 4th Battalion Wellington Regiment. It has the use of a full set of Bonsey instruments and also military uniforms, and has received £lOO in cash for its services during the year. The band attended .the Thames and Wellington contests and put up a very creditable performance at *>ach place, winning £72 10s in prize-money and 13 gold and silver medals The band has 38 playing members, and the secretary, receives applications every week from good’ men who want to come to New Plymouth, if work could lie found for them. At the annual meeting of the North Island Brass Bands’ Association, held in Wellington in February last, it was decided to hold the | next contest, at New Plymouth, in February, land we have a guarantee of £150,0 from the public towards the cost of the contest, which speaks well for New Plymouth. In the early days New Plymouth was classed as ii. musical town, and judging by the number citizens who have joined in the guarantee of the aforesaid sum, the town has not yet lost its reputation. The committee’s thanks for assistance during the year are extended to the High School girls for collecting £45 for the band funds, the Borough Council, the Herald and the Daily News, Messrs. A. J. Tunbridge (hon. auditor), C. Coleman (custodian). A. Hoskin (librarian), Thos. Avery and Sons (supplying programmes free), R. L. Lowe (conductor), and the members of the committee of the band. It will be noticed by the balance sheet that the band’s assets are £1605 10s and the liabilities £8 18s lid. After writing down an amount for depreciation, this speaks well for the band and the public assistance it has received. In conclusion, the committee solicits a continuance of the generous support given by. the public, and wishes the incoming committee a prosperous year. The balance sheet shows the total’expenses for the year to have been £ 1065 12s, which leaves a debit balance on the year's accounts of £8 18s lid, which is the band’s only 11a-
