TARIKI.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Tariki! One frequently hears expressions of surprise, and sometimes regret, at the fact that though the Taranaki Daily News has a very big hold in this district, indeed it is the district paper, and that While a great many other districts are more or less represented in its columns per medium of their local correspondents, very little, if anything, is ever seen in its columns of Tariki and its doings. This does not seem to be quite as it should be, and although we are not prepared to say that the importance of any place is always quite accurately measured and proved by the notes sent- to the various papers by their correspondents, we think at the same time it must be admitted that,. coming as it does under the scrutiny of thousands of readers all over the province, it helps, if only in a small way, to advertise the district from which the notes originate and so brings people, though separated by long distances, to a certain degree, in closer touch with one another.
The Daily News is read by practically everyone within a radius of ten miles of Tariki, and from its columns most of them glean their moiety of knowledge of the doings of the world in general and of the Taranaki world in particular. This being so it is only reasonable to suppose that many, if not all, would like to see their own district represented, if only by occasional outbursts from a local correspondent. This in future, when the spirit rooveth in this direction, will be done, providing 1 all circumstances are favorable, special attention being paid to all social, political or business meetings held locally or in the immediate neighborhood. Speaking. of social functions, there have been many in the shape of plain and fancy dress balls, as well as dances of a less pretentious order during the present winter, public and private parties of all descriptions, as well as progressive euchre and cribbage tournaments. The two latter are still in progress. Tn the cribbage tournament there are five teams left in the competition, two teams having withdrawn. With the completion of the first round of games the Tariki B team were leading with six wins out of seven games played, the Manganui team being second with five wins out of seven games played; Rugby Road, four wins out of seven; Tarjki A team, four wins out of seven? Croydon Road, three wins out of seven; Surrey Road, four wins out of seven.
The second round of games commenced on Monday night, July 17, and will he continued each Monday evening to the end of the round.
Out-door sport has not been neglected during the winter months, Tariki having put in the field quite a prominent team of footballers, of whom it might very well be said, they were unlucky in not winning the competition they competed for. Their closing game of the season was played on the Tariki ground on Thursday, July 20, against Ngaere, and though Tariki played a somewhat weak teem the scores (9 points to nil) was a very good indication of the relative playing" strength of the teams. Stratford team, I understand, are the winners, with Tariki a good second. In common with the rest of Taranaki, Tariki is experiencing one of the finest but coldest Winters on record. The dry weather during June and up to date has been very suitable for all classes of stock.
Farmers report having plenty of feed on hand with stock looking well, and there is every indication of an early spring and better prices for produce. A good deal of basic slag has come to the district this winter, showing that the farmers Here are fully alive to the importance of top-dressing. The local dairy company are building a new house for their manager, the former residence having been recently destroyed by fire. The Ratapiko dairy factory has been closed, and will not reopen during the coming season. Farmers in that district are going in for home separation and sending their cream to one of the outside companies.
