INGLEWOOD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) July 21. The funeral of the late Mr. Wm. J. Davis, which took place on Wednesday, wais attended by a gathering representing the oldest settlers in the district, as well as later comers and members of the Inglewood Bowling Club, of which he wa* a club member, who gave a very handsome memorial wreath of red and blue blossoms, the club's colors. Messrs. Gerald and Percy Pattie, nephews of the deceased, were also present, having travelled from Wellington for the funeral. The teacher and pupils of Waiongona School paid a peculiarly appropriate tribute to the deceased by standing silent for a space in the school and by sending a beautiful wreath in token of their appreciation of his kindess in' letting them use one of his paddocks for a playing field, he having been a close neighbor to the school. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Young. The euchre party and dance in aid of the soldiers’ memorial fund, held in the Town Hall on Thursday, was an entire success, socially and financially. The caixis competition, under the capable control of Mrs. Evans, was earnestly contested, with the result . that Mies Payne won the first and Mrs. Larmer the second ladles’ prizes, while Messrs. T. Lindsay and Wilfred Marshall secured those allotted to the men. The committee desire to thank Messrs. D. Clegg, A. Cottier, Drake Bros., C. O. Roberts and L. Sutherland for their donations in this connection. The floor for dancing was in excellent order, and though well filled was not overcrowded, so. that with the tactful attention of the M.C.’s, Messrs. Hodren and W. Eagar, the music supplied by Mr. Murfitt, which eatned- high praise, thorough enjoyment was ‘ iissure<l to' The lovers of dancing. Advantage was taken of an interval in the dancing, by Mr. J. R. Sutherland, to present Mr. Frank Julian with a gold medal, presented by Mr. P. McGonagle to commemorate his victory at billiards over Mr. Abbotmey in the match recently played at Inglewood. Altogether, with the very excellent supper provided by the ladies’ committee, a more enjoyable or satisfactory function would be hard to name.
