THE TAUPO SHAKES.
DUE TO THERMAL ACTIVITY. NO VOLCANIC DANGERS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Rotorua, Last Night. Mr. J. F. Sternberg, who accompanied Professor Marsden when the latter made observations of the seismic phenomena in the Taupo district, living five weeks in the Wairakei district, states he has felt far heavier shakes in other parte of New Zealand The heaviest in the Taupo district had nothing terrifying and most were minor tremors. The origin of the shaken was in the flat country between Whakaipo Bay and ; Oruanui, a distance of six to eight miles. ■ Regarding the cracks, the worst were at Whakxpaipo Bay, and the principal one was eighteen inches deep and twelve inches wide. Compared with this the cracks at Oruanui were trifles. The shake last Friday week probably came from White Island. The cause of the shakes was thermal and not volcanic. Mr. Stenberg saw a record of the shakes in 1897, showing conditions similar to the recent disturbance. the shocks diminishing in the same manner. Mr. Stenberg left Wairakei to-day, when the conditions were perfectly quiet.
