PERSONAL.
Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., returned to New Plymouth last night for the weekend The other Taranaki members return to-night. Mr. Sidney Wolf, who has been a prominent figure in Dunedin musical circles for a number of years past, died at his residence early on Saturday moaning after a lingering illness. The Rev. J. A. Kempthorne, of Taumarutlui, was inducted as vicar of Morfinsville by Ven. Archdeacon Cowie, of Hamilton, assisted by the Rev. Mortimer Jones, of Cambridge, on Friday evening. Mr. F. B. Glasgow, manager of the Rangiora branch of the Union Bank of Australasia, has so far recovered from the severe injuries sustained some time ago that he has been removed to his home;
Captain West, marine superintendent of the C. and D. Line, is at present in New Plymouth on business in connection with the visit of the Port Chalmers. He will return to his headquarters in Wellington* at the end of the month.
Mr. T. Glover, cartoonist of New Zealand Truth and Free Lance, has been appointed Melbourne, cartoonist and writer for the Sydney Bulletin, a position formerly held by such distinguished artists and penmen as the late Mr. Alfred Vincent and Mr. David Low.
Mr. J. D. Sole, who recently retired from the position of manager of the New Plymouth branch of Messrs. Archibald Clark and Sons, Ltd., has been presented by the staffs of the different branches of the firm with a handsome roller-top desk. In a letter forwarded to Mr-. Sole on behalf of the donors the hope is expressed that he may be long spared to make good use of the desk, and that every time he sits down to write it will bring to his memory the many years of faithitful service he has rendered to the company, and also of the very great regard and esteem in which he is held by all. Mr. Sole has also received a letter fropi the directors of the. firm expressing their high appreciation of his long and valued services.
The Rev. C. H. Laws, D.D., arrived in New Plymouth from Waitara last night and is the guest of the Rev. W. J. Elliott, Liardet Street. This morning Mr. Laws will be taken for a motor run to Mt. Egmont and in the evening will be the guest at a welcome social in the Whiteley Hall. To-morrow he will conduct the service at Waitara in the morning and will preach at the Whiteley Church in tlie evening. On Monday he Will address the Taranaki North Ministers’ Association at 10.30 and will attend the business meeting in the afternoon. Tn the evening Mr. Laws will conduct a monster inspiration rally in the Whiteley Church in connection with the Methodist centenary celebrations.
