STATE TRAWLERS.
NEW SOUTH WALES INQUIRY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, July 19. In the Assembly, Mr. Oakes made a statement regarding the State trawling industry. He announced that the losses since the scheme was started in 1915 totalled £148.952. He gave details of the contract for supplying the trawlers with coal over a period of five years, involving an outlay of £lOO,OOO. A feature of the contract, according to Mr. Oakes, was that it was made with a firm unknown in the coal trade and contained no provision to meet fluctuations in prices. The reasons g*Y en or entering into this contract were that it would enable trawlers to obtain coal cheaper in Sydney than by having to go to Newcastle. Mr. Dooley supported the demand which the manager of the trawlers had made for a full public inquiry into the matter. Mr. Dooley indicated that he was unaware that the contract, which had been made during his term of office. had been ’signed. Cabinet has decided to hold a full and searching inquiry into the State trawling industry.
