THE CATTLE TICK MENACE. DANGER TO TARANAKI. EVERY PRECAUTION TAKEN. By Telecraph.—Press AAociatton. Wellington, Last Night. The Council of Agriculture continued its conference to-day, when the following remits were considered:— ‘That the Government be urged to take the necessary precautions to prevent the introduction of cattle tick into Taranaki by way of Mokau; that a considerable number of cattie at the present time are being brought by this route, thereby causing anxiety in the district.”—From Taranaki. ‘That the Government be urged imine diately to take similar steps to those taken in the United States for the extermination in New Zealand of the cattle tick plague.” —From Wai rar ap a and East Coast. The first was withdrawn, the mover stating that Dr Reakes had reassured them that the department was taking every precaution in the matter. In regard to the second remit Dr. Reakes, Director of Agriculture, said that while the department was doing all it could to bring the tick under control he would like to state that the tick in New Zealand was a carrier of disease like those in the United States and Australia. The remit was adopted. The following remits were carried:— That the Agricultural Department be asked to confer with the freezing con-sanies in carrying out a practical test for frozen meat, especially beef. That the Government be requested tn call in all brands and ear marks which have been duplicated, and make the necessary re-allotment. That in the opinion of this conference the mating breeder of all stock should be considered the breeder. That the attention of the Board of Agriculture be drawn to the necessity of conducting extensive experiments in the scientific breeding of animals; and that they consider and d : seuse this question with the Department of Agriculture with the idea of starting such experiments. That considering the number of inferior rams offered for sale bv stud brokers it ram fairs and in other directions that the different flock book committees be request.ed to review the position and take definite action. That it be a recommendation to all A. and P Associations that any sheep disqualified for being unfairly shorn shall be branded with a distinguishing mark and be disqualified for life.
