COMMUNITY SING.
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EFFORT Another successful community “sing” was held in New Plymouth last night. Long before it was due to start the Workers’ Hall was packed and extra seats had to be brought in. Soloists there were in plenty, and in nearly all the songs the verses were sung as solos, with the audience joining in the choruses. Mr. Ken Ward, who, with Mr. R. Murphy, provided the accompaniments, opened with the “Bells of St. Mary’s,” after a verse of the National Anthem had been sung. Then came Mr. Briggs with “Till the Sands of the Desert Grow Cold,” followed by the good rousing chorus of “Do I? Yes I do!” In quick succession came “My Old Kentucky Home,’’ “Mother Machree” and “The Water Melon Vine,” for which Mr. Martin played a banjo accompaniment, giving “Honey Play in Your Own Backyard'* as an encore. Shortly after this Mr. R. L. Cooper took charge as song leader. Mr. Howlett followed, with “Abe.” Mrs. Ferry’s fine voice was heard to advantage in “Feather Your Nest,” and then came Mr Bellringer with a verv good rendering of “Land of Hope and Glory." “Dixie” (Miss Thomas) and “Peggy O’Neill” (Miss Hosking) followed until the treat of the evening came on. This was Miss Annie White’s rendering of the popular “Let the Rest of the World Go By/* The satisfactory sum of approximately £l2 was taken at the door, and this is being used by the Sports Ground Committee in providing work for unemployed men on the Sports ; Ground. The chairman, Mr. A. L. Humphries, intimated that if the audience desired it another concert would be given for the same object next week, and this suggestion was heartily approved by those present.
