CHARGE OF FORGERY.
EX-CIVIL SERVANT IN COURT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. W. N. Ward was before the Court today on nine charges of forging, obliterating and correcting native land documents and of stealing documents and stamps of the value of £l5B. The charges went back as far as November 14, 1916. Accused was a native land clerk and retired on March 31. It was then found that there was great confusion and the result was that Ward’s house was searched. He gave up 169 documents, but the police were not satisfied and unearthed 130 more. Fees, it was alleged had been paid on 188 documents, but it was asserted that stamps had never been fixed. A large number of law clerks and solicitors gave evidence in support of the prosecution and the hearing was adjourned.
