PERSONAL.

The death occurred at Wellington on Saturday of Mr. R. J. Hardie-Shaw, the well-known photographer. A New York cablegram reports the death of Mr. Charles Mill, editor of the New York Times for 40 years.

At yesterday’s meeting of the Hospital Board the names of Misses Alma Aitken, of New Plymouth, and E. M. Livesy, of Nelson, were placed on the probationers’ list. The death is reported from paralysis of Mr. W. H. Bolton, of the Hawera staff of the New Zealand Loin and Mercantile Co.

Mr. A, Turnbull, of Huirangi, left by the mail train yesterday for Wellington, where he will attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Shorthorn Society. Nurse L. Fraser, who has been appointed district nurse for Uruti, advised the Hospital Board yesterday that she will arrive in New Plymouth on July 24 to take up her duties. A Paris cable reports the death of M. Leon Boyle, the French tenor. He was regarded as the finest Don Jose who ever appeared in Carmen. He was aged 51. Dr. J. H. McLean, C.BJE., has been appointed port health officer of Wellington in succession to Dr. J. Boyd, who is to be transferred to Auckland.

Dr. C. Strickland, formerly in the New Zealand Medical Corps, has been appointed Professor of Medical Entomology m the’ School of Tropical Medicine, Calcutta.

News has been received in Auckland of the death in England of the Rev. George Fossick Wilson, formerly president of the Flying Angel Mission to Seamen.

Mr. M. Fraser, chairman of the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, who has been confined to his residence during the past few days, is reported to ’be improving. At yesterday’s meeting of the board a resolution of sympathy with him in his indisposition was passed. Rev. Father Saunderson, of Pahiatua, was on Sunday removed to the local hospital in a very serious Condition. The reverend gentleman had been on a brief visit to New Plymouth at the beginning of last week, and on returning home became very ill. Miss B. A. Campbell, matron of the New Plymouth Hospital, is at present on extended holiday leave, her place being taken temporarily by Sister R. 8. Barnett. Sister Smith is also on leave, while Nurses Mackie and Merriman have resumed duty. Miss E. P. Chapman assumed charge of the massage department on the 28th ult.

The death occurred in London on Sunday of Mr. Alf Davies, recently proprietor of the Central Hotel, Waitara. He was a member of the Patea Borough Council and of the Chamber of Commerce. Ten years ago he was selected to represent Great Britain at the Olympic Games as a swimmer. He is survived by his wife (a daughter of the late Mr. Larsen, formerly of Patea), and two children.

Constable Frank JJemm, who leaves New Plymouth on transfer to Hawera to-day, was the guest yesterday afternoon of the Old Boys’ Football Club, for whose senior team he has played wing three-quarter during the present season. In making a presentation of a set of military hair-brushes, -together with an appropriately inscribed case, Mr. Reg. Brokenshire commented upon the keen interest Mr. Lemm took in football and the clean game he always played. He was also a good scoring man and the loss to the team caused by Mr. Lemm’s transfer would be regretted by all his club mates. The gathering then sang “For he’s a jolly good fellow,” after which Mr. Lemm briefly responded, thanking th© club for the presentation.
