FARMERS TOP THE LIST. The bankruptcies during the first six months of the current year show an enormous increase compared with the figures for the corresponding quarter of last year, the totals being 333, as against 128. an increase of 205, equal to over 160 per cent. The farming industry supplied the greatest number of jthe bankruptcies for the half-year; The figures for each month of the half year compare with those for the same months of last years as under:

Of the 333 bankruptcies in the first half of this year farmers accounted for 85, or nearly 25 per cent, of the total. The motor trade came nex;t with 35 bankruptcies, or a little over 10 per cent, of the total. Laborers accounted for 28, Maoris for 21, and land agents for 13. The failures amongst Maoris are rather large, whether as compared with the total number of bankruptcies, or as compared with the Maori population.
