CONTROL OF MEAT.
OBJECT OF THE BOARD. ITS AIMS MADE CLEAR. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Mr. David Jones, M.P., chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, stated to-day that enquiries had been received as to the future policy of the board, and he desired to quote for public information the following unanimous resolution of the board, which fully set out the position: “That the objective of the board is to control the whole of the exported meat of the Dominion, in order that it may yield the highest net return to the producer. The mandate from the producers and the Legislature is very clear and definite in the matter. The reduction of charges for freezing, shipping, etc., is important, but it is not the principal work of the board, but incidental to it. The objective stated as the aim does not necessarily mean that the board will name now the particular date at which such control should operate, but that all our plan shall be laid down with that as our ultimate object, which we intend to carry out as soon as the machinery is perfected and a favorable opportunity offers. Experience may modify our plans. If, say, prices are maintained at such a high level that in the opinion of the board action would not be warranted we may and probably would be able to give sound reasons why we should not interfere; but we as a board do keep steadfastly before us the fact that the control of the meat of the Dominion is our job.”
