IRISH WARFARE.
NATIONALISTS’ SUCCESS, RAID OF DESTRUCTION, RAILWAYS TORN UP. By- Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jtdy 18, 8.5 p.m. London, July 18. An official report from Dublin states that Nationalist troops have captured Baltinglass, Tullow and Newtownbarry. National troops surrounded Mount Hazel, the Duke de Stacpoole’s residence, in County Galway, and thirty-four Irregulars, who were in occupation, surrendered without a shot being fired. Reports from West Donegal state that fourteen flying columns, each of forty Irregulars, left Glenveagh Castle, destroying property and tearing up rails. Cardinal Logue, preaching at Carlingford, said that looting, burnings and murders were bringing disgrace and ruin upon Ireland, and that anyone participating iu such outrages in future would do so on pain of excommunication. PEACE CONFERENCE PROPOSED. TO SAVE PROPERTY. London, July 16. In view of the anxiety caused by the deliberate destruction of property by the Irregulars, an effort is being made by the Irish Labor Party and the Trades Union Congress to secure peace by a conference. The executive and Labonte members of the new Parliament decided during the week-end to invite all their colleagues in Parliament to meet at the Mansion House, Dublin, on the 20th. BIG EVENTS PENDING. STERN MEASURES LIKELY. London. July 17. Reuter’s Dublin correspondent says that it is believed big events are pending in the south and west. The Government is preparing stern measures against the heart of the Irregulars’ existence. namely the line from Limerick to Waterford, where heavy fighting is expected. The Government is convinced that, once the revolt in this part of the country has been crushed, the foundations of a true democratic Government will be laid.
The impairment in the morale of the Republicans elsewhere is indicated by the fact that since the commencement of the fighting the Nationals have taken prisoner nearly 2000 Irregulars with small loss of life.
