AN UNUSUAL CASE. By Telegraph-—Press Association. Christchurch, July 17. In the Supreme Court sentence was passed this morning by Mr. Justice Adams on John Leonard, who was convicted of intercourse with his wife while the latter was a patient at the Sunnyside Mental Hospital. Leonard was convicted on November 15, when the jury made a strong recommendation to mercy, as they believed the act was committeed through ignorance of the law. During the hearing the question was raised whether the husband was liable in such an instance, and a case I was stated for the opinion of the Appeal Court, which in Mav affirmed the conviction. His Honor said the ease was a very unusual one. and. in view of all the cireurnstances, he ordered Leonard to be detained in custody till the rising of the court.
