THE ABATTOIRS.

NOT PAYING THEIR WAY. REPORT TO THE COUNCIL. The lose sustained by the working of the New Plymouth abattoirs formed the subject of a report to the Borough Council last night. * The general manager reported on the annual balance-sheet of the abattoirs undertaking as follows: —The result of the year’s working, after making an allowance of £259 Is 2d for depreciation, is a loss of £772 19s Bd. A glance at previous reports will disclose that this undertaking has never been able to pay its way, the total accumulated loss to ' date being £3515 14s 3d. The fees have been raised from time to time, the last increase being made in September, 191 S. The increases were, however, not sufficient to -prevent further losses accruing. The total loss of £3515 14s 3d shown is not an actual cash loss, but it means ‘ that the depreciation account is almost i entirely a book entry. I The following figures set out concisely this aspect of the position: Depreci- ' ation account, £4608 18s 3d; advance I from district fund, £133 6s 6d; difference between sundry creditors and sundry debtors accounts, £36 10s 7d: £4778 15s 4d; total accumulated loss, £3515 14s 3d; capital expenditure from revenue, £1263 Is Id: £4778 15s 4d. Rather more expenditure than usual was incurred last year upon repairs, and in consequence the expenditure for the year exceeded the rceipts by £461 16s 9d. A cash balance of £328 10a 3d was, however, brought forward at the beginning of the year and the differ--1 once, £133 6s 6d. was advanced from j the district fund account. There was also an account for repairs of £lB4 19s 2d outstanding at the end of the year and had this been paid the expenditure would have exceeded the receipts by £646 15s lid. Repairs for the current | year will also be fairly extensive and unless the fees are increased further advances from the district fund account will require to be made again this year.
