SECOND SALARY “CUT.”
LOCAL BODY’S OPINION. RE DUCTION IMPERATIVE. I The New Plymouth branch of the Civil; Servants’ Association circularised the Stratford County Council on Saturday, protesting against the second bonus "cut,” and asking for an expression of opinion as to the attitude of the public on the matter. Cr J. T. Belcher said it would be unwise to express any opinion and that the question was a matter between the Government and the parties concerned. Cr. Were said everyone was very much concerned. j The Chairman said that the Council ' had cut much more off their employees’ pay than the Government was taking from the civil servants. The Government was to be commended in trying , to cut down expenses. Mr. Massey was ; very lenient indeed, and he kept a num- 1 ber of civil servants on in preference j to turning them adrift, unemployed. 1 Possibly it would be better if he put off j the waste and the wasters, the Govern- i ment service being admittedly over- 1 staffed. He moved: “That this Council, | knowing the financial position ot the ! ratepayers, considers that the Govern- i ment is treating the civil servants i leniently.” Cr. Were said he would second the ! motion with regret. Cr. O'Neill said he did not think the ’ question should have been asked of the Council The Chairman amended his motion to read: “That this Council, knowing the financial position of the ratepayers, con- ' aiders that the ‘cut’ was absolutely imperative.” The Chairman: We are all sorry that this has got to be. The amended motion was carried.
