THE UNEMPLOYED.
ATTITUDE OF WORKERS’ COUNCIL. AWARD RATES WANTED. A special meeting of the Taranaki Workers’ Council was held on Saturday to discuss the unemployment and relief work. It was unanimously decided: “That the Taranaki Workers’ Council does not hold any official representation on the relief committee and will not give its sanction to any such representation until the principle of paying the award wages is adopted.” It was decided to discontinue the use of the seal of the Taranaki Workers’ Council in connection with the committee’s employment scheme. There was also a resolution passed calling a meeting of all unionists to be held in the Workers’ Social Hall (lower room) to-morrow at 8 p.m. to decide what action shall be taken by unionists in subscribing towards the fund, or what effort should be taken to raise financial support for the unemployed relief fund on condition that award wages be paid on. relief works. It was the general opinion of the council that the average relief worker requires more, not less, than a bare living wage at the present time.
