MELTING SNOW.
WAIRARAPA RIVERS FLOODED. ROADS AND FARMS UNDER WATER. Masterton, July 12. Warm rains on the ranges yesterday melted the snow and caused severe floods in nearly all the rivers in .the Wairarapa district. To-day, however, the waters have subsided. The rivers were apparently at the highest level yesterday morning between 7 o’clock-and 10. The main road on the Oarterton side of the Waiohine bridge was two feet under water for several chains, and at times a dozen cars were drawn up, their drivers being doubtful whether to risk the passage. Some made the attempt, and had to be hauled to dry ground by horses. The road was not passable until mid-day. Hundreds of acres in this vicinity were inundated, including nearly the whole of the Ahiakouka soldiers’ settlement. The Waingawa was bank-high, and much timber was brought down. The water swept over the groynes, and niany sheep were drowned and fences laid flat. Large quantities c-f metal were washed off the roads in the Masterton district. The Waipoua River did most of the damage. On the Mt. Bruce Road, over 200 acres of one farm were under water, but all the stock was removed in time. Water was across the road near Kummer’s bridge. The Ruamahunga was also very high for a few hours, and the roadway and several acres of land were flooded iby the bridge on the Te Ore Ore Road. Lower down in the vicinity of Martinborough the flood was mere serious.
The coastal districts were not affected materially.
