EVERYBODY’S. WESLEY BA-RRY LN “STRANGER THAN FICTION.” MATINEE TO-DAY AT 2 P.M. Lesley Barry and Katherine MacDonald star in “Stranger Than Fiction” at Everybody’s at both sessions to-day. In this picture Wesley Barry appears in the role of “Freckles,” a role very similar to that of “Dinty,” his recent big success. As “Freckles/’ a little street urchin of New York, young Barry depicts a fun-loving yet pathetic little lad, who always finds a soft spot in the hearts of those who see him. As Diane Drexel, a New York society bud, Miss MacDonald has a most charming role. Bored by her life of teas and social functions, she desides to take an active partr in capturing the Black Heart Gang. What follows calls for exceptional acting and character portrayal, and Miss MacDonald handles the role admirably.
COMING MONDAY. “THE GOLDEN SNARE.” James Oliver Curwood’s absorbing North Country story “The Golden Snare,” with a splendid cast headed by Lewis S. Stone and Ruth Renick, will be the feature film offering at Everybody’s next week. This production was made by Associated First National Pictures. Many of the scenes were filmed in some of the moat picturesque locations of the Canadian Northwest, and the spirit of this gripping Curwood tale of a manhunt in the frozen wilds and the finding there of a fair-haired beauty is said to have been well caught.
THE PEOPLE’S. “WHY ANNOUNCE YOUR MARRIAGE?” MATINEE TO-DAY AT 2 P.M. The attraction at the People’s Theatre to-day and to-night is the New Selznick comedy drama “Why Announce Your Marriage?” starring Elaine Hammerstein and Miles Welsh. Miss Hammerstein plays the part of a successful artist, who refuses to give up her career to be merely a wife. But she’s in love. And so she marries the man, but they keep it hidden from their friends. Now there are many young couples who have kept their, marriages secret, but only because someone would disapprove. In this instance, everyone is urging the couple to marry, although they x are married already. But the newlyweds grow careless. And the gossips get busy. And there’s a good deal of embarrassment for everyone until a burglar upsets everything, including the banisters. The supporting films are Topical, Comedy, Scenic and episode five of the popular serial Thunderbolt Jack. The prices are as usual, D.C. Is 6d, Stalls Is. Children Od to matinee.
EMPIRE THEATRE. THE FAMOUS N.Z. DIGGERS. RETURN VISIT. The famous Diggers will again appear in the Empire Theatre on Saturday and Monday, July 22 and 24, and will present the second edition of their revue “Box o’ Tricks,” an entirely new programme. The Christchurch Press characterises the second edition of the revue as better than the first. There are certainly some very fine features in it. Joe Valli has some more of his inimitable comicalities. Frank Perryn draws some original and very funny characterisations from his box of humor. Gus Dawson comes to light in the programme with some most extraordinary dancing features. He presents a dance scena entitled “The Scarecrow.” This scene, which made such a hit while Mr. Dawson was with J. C. Williamson’s, represents the coming to life of a scarecrow during the small hours of the night, the subsequent moonlight revels, and the return to its former position in the field as day breaks and the sun rises. “Washing the Baby” is one of the most ridiculously funny sketches one could imagine, and it loses nothing at the hands of Frank Perryn and Stan Lawson. “The Dance Orientate,” by Gus Dawson and Stan Lawson is a high example of terpsichorean perfection. “The Burlesque Fortune-teller” and the “Magic Hat,” are all good examples of the best Digger humor. Ivan Marshall, Fred Webber and other vocalists have all new songs to sing. Prices are 4s 3s and 2s as usual, and the box plans open at Colliers on Thursday next.
