“LET’S ALL SING.”

A SUCCESSFUL EFFORT HELPING THE UNEMPLOYED. A thoroughly enjoyable community “sing song.” arranged by the New Plymouth Sports Ground Committee, was held at the Empire Theatre last night, when a large crowd attended. Archdeacon F. G. Evans presided, and an orchestra consisting of Messrs Ken. Ward (piano). R. Taylor (cornet), and R. Murphy (violin) played the accompaniments. Under the leadership of Mr. G. Holder the audience were soon in good humor, the happy and enthusiastic crowd expanding their lungs to the full in singing the various songs on the sheet provided. All the old favorites and the modern popular “hits” were there, and for nearly two hours, to quote the programme, “Everyone was happy, everyone was glad.” Volunteers were called for to sing the verses of the songs, the crowd taking up the choruses and singing them with great vigor. The community singing was interspersed with a recitation by Mr. Holder and a banjo solo by Mr. Martin, both items being heartily applauded. Prior to the commencement of the “sing” the Regimental Band, conducted by Mr. Tt. L. Lowe, gave several selections outside the theatre. At the end of a pleasant evening Archdeacon Evans announced that, as the “sing” had proved so successful, it was proposed to arrange another evening of community singing for next week. A moderate charge for admission resulted in the sum of £ll being raised. This is to be donated to the unemployed fund.
