THE NORDEN CUP. SUSTAINED BY TARANAKI. Taranaki succeeded in retaining the Norden Hockey Cup after a strenuous and interesting game against Wanganui at Hawera yesterday. the gaifne ending in a draw with the scores two ail. All the goals were scored early in the first spell, Wanganui having slightly the better of the play. From then on there was nothing to choose between the teams, and play fluctuated from one end of the field to the other, a feature of the game being the safe play of both goal keepers, who saved a number of scores, and Bennie (Taranaki) being particulrly safe. The ground was greasy after heavy rain overnight, but play on the whole was of a good standard. Wanganui attacked from the bully off and Breed had a shot, T. Bennie saving. Taranaki returned the attack. Free making a good run. Breed brought Wanganui down again, sending the ball through to Simmons, who neatly shot a goal. Taranaki essayed a rousing rush. W. Bennie, Pennington and Hendrickson participating. Bennie tried a shot, but slipped when hitting, and the ball went wide. A hard struggle round Wanganui's goal ensued and culminated in Brigg’s goaling. Obstruction by Briggs spoiled another tfood chance for Taranaki. Wanganui then came swarming down. Breed centring to Hawkins, who neatly scored. Taranaki again took the I offensive, but Spurdie carried forward and ! stayed the rush. Keeping up the pressure Taranaki gave W. Bennie another chance, hut he sent the ball high above the net. Wanganui cleared, but.the home team came again, Page playing off-side and spoiling a chance. But Wanganui could not Iteep their opponents out and W. Bennie goaled after close play around the posts. The spell ended: Taranaki 2, Wanganui 2. Wanganui immediately attacked on resuming, Bree taking a shot, which was neatly* blocked by T. Bennie. Taranaki came down fast, but hit too hard and missed a chance. Gurney initiated a strong Wanganui rush which was checked when dangerous, McGuinness obstructing. Wanganui had another shot, the ball striking the post and rebounding into play. Frethey and Briggs commenced a forward move by Taranaki, but hard hitting again spoiled a chance. Page was putting in good work for Taranaki, Pennington spoiling a chance by off-side play. W. Bennie carried play on and tried a shot, which narowly missed the net. Gurney was prominent in a Wanganui rush, a moment later, T. Bennie saving. Swinging play to the other end of the field Taranaki were nearly home, but missed a chance by a player carrying the ball forward. Bach side was now full out toi force a decision and a rapid exchange of hitting followed. "Webb had a shot, which went above the net.
