(By Wire—Special to News.) Wellington, Last Night. The weather at Trentham to-day was fine, but the going was heavy and holding. The first event on the programme was the Corunna Hurdles, for which Royal Exchange was fancied. There was also strong support for Hushman, Mangamahoe, Rowan and Kareao. Totara Jack and Royal Exchange went out fast and were first, over the initial obstacle. The pair led through the straight, with Rowan close up. Five furlongs from home Royal Exchange, Rowan, Nautical, and Sir Wai were well clear. Royal Exchange led into the straight, but took the last fence badly, and in the finish Nautical got up to beat her by half a length. Sir Wai was two lengths away third and Rowan was fourth. Walton fell and Hushman was pulled up. Turner, the rider of Walton, brohe a collarbone. For the Maiden Handicap Lady Ridicule carried the confidence of investors. The race proved a good thing for Lady Ridicule, who was always well placed, and hitting the front at the bottom of the straight went right away from the field and won by eight lengths from Blush, who beat Orellana by a head, with Punishment fourth. Comical finished well back.
The Civil Form —Haurangi bracket was in demand for the Jutland Handicap and others well fancied were Jolly Princess, Radial, Listening Post and Counter Stroke. The start was a good one. Astinome began smartly and led a bunched field into the straight. Backsheesh was in charge at the distance, but several had chances, and in the run to the post Miss Gold shot out and went on to win easily by three lengths. Backsheesh stalled off Astinome and got second place by a head and Civil Form was close up fourth. Seadown, Red Cent, and Old Gold had -an army of supporters in the Hack Steeplechase. Tatton Park led at the start, and was in charge passing through the straight. Hyginas fell at the fence turning out of the straight and Tatton Park camo down at the sod wall. Brown Linnet moved up to the leaders and as they passed the stands the second time John Bunny, Romance and Brown Linnet were in front, with Scadown and Red Cent at the head of the others. Brown Linnet took charge a mile from home and went right away from the field. The second division was Romance, John Bunny and Seadown. Nothing appeared to have a chance with Biown Linnet, but the southerner fell at the post and rails. Seadown then took charge, but Romance joined hiim at the last fence and beat him home by three lengths. Old Gold was five lengths away third and Oak Rose was fourth. Brown Linnet broke a leg. General Raven also fell at the post and rails.
Royal Box was popular for the Parliamentary Handicap, he being onnsiderably better backed than Arch Salute, Tenterfleld. Tamo Fox. Demos and Gold Kip. At the start Omahu and Stork were cut out. When the field settled down Missland took charge and she led into the back stretch, where Dutch Courage hit the front. At the seven furlong post Dutch Courage was loading from Strategy, Arch Salute and Royal Box. At six furlongs Demos moved up behind Dutch Courage and crossing the top Dainty Step and Mort Avis were in behind the leaders. A great finish up the straight ensued, the field being spread right across the course. Demos was in charge below the distance, but faded. Then Omahu shot up, and next Mort Avis appeared on the scene. Finally Tame Fox and Arch Salute finished fast on the outer and Tame Fox won by a head. Omahu was another head away third, Mort Avis fourth, Forest Gohl fifth, and Tenterfield sixth. The public would not hear of the defeat of L’Amour in the Fleet Handicap. L'Amour got out well and then was dropped in behind Zero Hour and Yankee Dan, who made the running to the straight, where Yankee Dan took charge. L'Amour quickly settled Yankee Dan, but Battle Knight finished well and won nicely by a length, Yankee Dan and Wrangle dead heating for second a length
In the High-Weight Handicap Ruatara was early in the lead, with Urgency, Bitholia and Rorke’s Drift handy. Coalition moved up into second place as they ran down the back. Four furlongs from home Penuary Rose was in behind the leaders. Rorke’s Drift was stopped when malting a run on the rails in the straight and Urgency took charge and went on to win by two lengths from Penury Rose, who just beat Coalition. Gladful was fourth. The Petono Handicap was contested by a fairly big field of hack sprinters. When the horses raced on to the course proper Big Push was in front and from there on he forged ahead and won with ease by five lengths from Loyal Maid, who beat Cochinenj on. the post for second. was fourth. Sir Burnett ran badly.

THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE,’ r PROTEST AT TAXATION, v “. Wellington, Last Night. The annual conference of the Country Racing Clubs’ Association was held this evening. In the* absence of Mr. Albert Bruce (Thames), Mr. D. J. Evans (Westland) presided. Thb annual 'report was adopted. It was decided: .“That the conference views with alArm and concern the burden of taxation now placed on sport, and recognises the serious effect it is having on the effective maintenance of stakes and appointments by coun-try-clubs;. that in view of the situation now developing, the' Government be urged to review the incidence of racing taxation as early as possible, with the object of affording relief to many clubs which are struggling to meet their obligations, and at the same time endeavoring to maintain the standard of racing for the betterment of the turf, where people enjoy their popular pastime in a rational and wellregulated way.” It was resolved: “That the Government be urged to take into favorable consideration that portion of the report of the late Racing Commission which recommended an increase jn totalisator permits to new clubs and to existing clubs, as the situation justifies such increase, and that upon -such permits being authorised, the Minister of Internal Affairs be empowered to allocate the same after consultation with the racing and trotting authorities.” It was decided to direct the attention of the Government to the heavy impost upon owners by the stakes tax, and urging a reduction from 10 per cent, to 2y z I>sr cent. The hope was expresesd in a resolution that, in the interests of future sport. Parliament would not entertain the petition for the licensing of bookmakers. It was believed such a course would be detrimental to the standard of sport now being attained in the Dominion. It was resolved that if it is desired to extend the privileges to the public for investing on outside meetings, it be suggested to the Government to permit investments on totalisators to be sent through the Post and Telegraph Office to the secretaries of racing clubs, and that the publication of dividends be legalised. Officers were elected as follow: President, Mr. A. Bruce (Thames) ; vice-president, Mr. D. J. Evans (Westland) ; executive, the Hon. E. W. Alison (Auckland). Mr. J. F. Finney (Nelson), Mr. J.
