MINERS FIGHT SHERIFFS. TWO MEN KILLED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received July 11, 8.35 p.m. New York, July 10, Point Marion, Pennsylvania, reports that two striking miners were killed and one badly wounded in pitched battles between strikers and deputy-sheriffs protecting the mine property. The American Federation of Labor is taking active steps to head off an attempt by the Communist party to obtain control of the various members of unions which have revoked their charters, including the bookkeepers, stenographers, and accountants’ unions and various sub-unions in the garment trades in New York City. THE RAILWAY TROUBLE. MAILS PROTECTED AND EXPEDITED. Received July 11, 8.35 p.m. Washington, July 10. President Harding and Mr. Weeks (Secretary for War) held a consultation regarding the reports that mails were held up at various parts of the West, oyring to the strike of railwaymen. A special six-round heavyweight boxing bout to-night between Arthur Smith (Oamaru) and Hooke (champion of South Canterbury) resulted in the latter being knocked out in the round.
