Colonel Amery’s Act was the first definite step towards thia end and was a great achievement. Sir Joseph Cook (High Com mi as inn pyfor Australia ), supporting the toast, said Colonel Amery had recognised one or two things that were fundamental. One was the recognition that this country had no right to leave its ex-service to want whet) there was room overseas for them to live in plenty and comfort. Sir Joseph Cook believed there waa a real disposition on the part of the authorities here to distribute the surplus people within the Empire. He regarded Colonel Amery as the pioneer of a new movement. Sir James Allen (High Commissioner for New Zealand/ said Colonel Amery was a man to whom we owed much and we would owe more to him in the future.
