BANKING FIGURES.
DEPOSITS DROP SIX MILLIONS. POSITION GENERALLY IMPROVING. The banking averages for the second quarter of the year give emphasis to the favorable showing which was a noticeable feature of the March quarter’s averages. Liquidation and deflation are proceeding satisfactorily, but the position is still one calling for care and caution and strict economy- The salient items of the return, compared with the figures for the corresponding quarter of last year, show the following movements:
Government deposits decreased £ 2,177,821 Free deposits decreased 4,218,160 Fixed deposits increased 05.951 Advances decreased 7,010,609 Discounts decreased 1,218,942 Circulation decreased 537,319 Coin and bullion increased ... 116,058
