Despite adverse weather conditions the Vice-Regals their New Plymouth season before a crowded house in the Empire Theatre last night, and such was the excellence of the programme submitted that the public will find a three night season all too short in which to enjoy the humor of this talented company. The principal enjoyment of th© evening was' provided by Claude Dampier and Hilda Attenboro, who submitted “fifteen minutes of scientific nonsense,” and it was one prolonged laugh. Mr. Dampier showed himself to be a versatile comedian of ! rare ability, and hie turn was characI terised by distinctive humor. Many years ago be delighted New Zealanders, and suffice it to say that he comes back with his supply rof fun-making devices replenished with many novel items. Assisted by Miss Attenboro and a piano he thoroughly entertained till he was compelled to refuse further encores.
The opening chorus cf the ViceRegals, by a pretty color scheme, was followed by a song and dance-'by Hilda Attenboro and Clyde Field. Then Pat Hanna produced the semi-tipsy reveller to perfection and got off some telling local hits. Bobbie Peftrc?’’ revealed a splendid baritone voice, and. being recalled twice sang “Funiculi Funicula” and “Questa a Quella.” Clyde Fields whistled and danced in a variety of entertaining ways. Chris Kilner, Hilda Attenboro and Norman French demonstrated to the audience that the Eternal Triangle is not always as complicated as many believe, and "solved an embarrassing problem in a unique manner. A contralto of rare merit is Miss Wynne Macaboy, and much enjoyment was derived from the songs rendered with the assistance of Miss Jessie Meadows. A comedian' of no mean ability Mr. Johnnie Merks kept the audience in smiles and found much favor with his amusing jokes and antics. Special mention must be made of the manner in which Messrs. Kilner and French conducted the Marionettes. The former as Mr. Massey and the latter as Lord Jellicoe induced the patrons to join whole-heartedly in a catchy little chorus. The final. “History Repeats Itself,” was a unique display of various talent, a ghost delusion being particularly well sustained. . An unexpected ending rounds off an unusually interesting sketch.
