NEW PLYMOUTH CGUNCILr ■ HOSPITAL SANITATION.The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Owing to the absence through indisposition of the Mayor (Mr. F E. Wilson/ the deputy-Mayor (Cr.' J. Kibby) presided. There Were also present Crs T. N. Blackira.ll. E Dingle, R. A. Large, J. Brown. R. L. Parkin, \V. Rum ba Li and V. Griffiths The sanitary inspector (Mr. R. Day) wrote. Ou looking into a question of drainage at the hospital this week I found that a storm-water channel had been connected to the sewer. This at the hospital is particularly serious. It not only is likely to block the sewer with grit, but may cause drain air to be discharged near the front gate- I suggest that the Hospital Board be written to, pointing out the serious ccffisaquences that may arise by inexperienced persons tampering with the sewers. The matter will be brought before the Hospital Board. DARTMC-OR WATER SERVICE. A petition, containing nine signatures, was presented by ratepayers resident in Dorset Avenue, Dartmoor, “again asking that the numerous requests for a water service down the street, the conditions of which your Council is wgll conversant with, be re-opened. We are aware that the by-laws cannot prevent new services being connected where- the main goes through the street, and six houses have been connected during the last six weeks This does net justify your Council’s reply to a petition some months ago that there are too many connections on the %in pipe and that no more would be made. We are also aware that this street is one in which work was authorised in connection with the loan some time ago. but it will be some considerable time before we receive the benefit of this loan.” —The engineer wrote that the mains were ordered and this street would be one of the first to be reticulated. The petitioners will be informed accordingly.
FIRST AID APPLIANCES. F. J. Lyons, writing on behalf of the General Laborers’ Industrial Union, asked that a first-aid outfit be placed at the Fitzroy crushing plant.—A packet of bandages will be placed in the crasher motor-shed, and at the Lemon Street yards. The engineer reported that the first-aid outfit at the abattoirs was placed there by direction of the Labor Department, who thought this would meet all needs of the crusher men, only two or three of whom are constantly there. R. G. Brabyn, secretary of the Taranaki Workers’ Council, wrote in reference to the same subject. STREET LIGHTS. Percy Stainton, writing on behalf of Beach Street residents, asked that a street light be placed at the corner of Beach and Devon Streets. The residents fully appreciated the present difficulty regarding current, and to overcome this >ugc e,a^ that the light some forty yards further on be brought back to the corner. Tbis, it was believed, would inconvenience no one. —Held over pending further electrical supply being available. Eleven ratepayers and residents of Nonnanby Street, Fitzroy, forwarded a petition in which the Council was asked, in view of the darkness of this street, and the bad approach from Vogel Street, to erect a street light on the east side of Normanby Street facing Vogel Street, —Held over.
THE NEW ’BUS,. A. R. Harris Co.. Ltd., Christchurch, forwarded the preliminary design of the proposed body for the electric omnibus. It was pointed out that every consideration to ventilation and accessibility had been given. If tbe general layout were approved, they could then get on with more detail drawings and specifications, obtain quotations, and submit for final acceptance. An Auckland firm asked that they be allowed to forward a quotation for the building of a chassis body as required by the Council. Approval was granted. Harris and Co. will also be asked to quote for the design forwarded by them. WHITELEY STREET CAR STOP. The secretary of the Moturoa Progressive Association wrote in reference to the Whiteley car stop. It was pointed out that the Whiteley Street stop served a few people at the Breakwater end of the road, and a suggestion was made that the Council should consider the advistbility of making an overlapping atop, the section from the Breakwater to end at Carter’s store, and the section from town at Bayley Road, eliminating the Whiteley Street stop. The electrical engineer reported: In connection with the above request I could not look upon the moving of the Whiteley Street section with favor, as this section was fixed with a definite object relative to the Breakwater traffic. To make the section end at Bayley Road would mean an additional stop there and this should be avoided, especially as the distance between Whiteley Street and Bayley Road is so small—only five chains. ’ The Whiteley Street section serves more people than Bayley. Road will ever do. as the majority of the beach population go to the Pioneer Street stop. I see no objection to allowing an overlap between the South Road corner and the Whiteley Street section. This would benefit those from the Breakwater end wishing to stop at the stores at this corner and can be operated without difficulty. The matter was left in the hands of the engineer. 1 GENERAL. The secretary of the New Plymouth Amateur Swimming Club forwarded £9, as a donation for the erection of permanent seating accommodation at the municipal baths, and L3s 6d. being the nett proceeds of the carnival held for the benefit of the baths fund. James S. Leitch, Devon Street East, intimated that he was prepared to take over the Mt. Bryan reserve, to fehce it and grub it out, if the Council would give a guarantee for six years’ lease to him. —As the work is one proposed by the unemployment committee the offer of Mr. Leitch to lease Mt. Bryan domain was deferred for the Mayor to deal with.
W. J. Anstis waited upon the Council and explained that he had made a mistake in his tender for earthwork at
Waiwaka Terrace. It was decided thatr under the circumstances the agreement signed by Mr.’ Anstis be cancelled and that one half of his deposit of £lO be forfeited, the balance to be refunded. Consideration of the other tenders for . the work was deferred. Messrs Weston and Billing, on behalf of the executors of the estate of the late Mr. Henry Weston, asked for reconsideration of a petition recently 1 presented to extend the water supply - on Frankley Road so as to serve the • residence of Mr. A. P. Lister, together • with other properties in the near neighborhood—Consideration deferred. It was decided that the calling of • tenders for the earthwork on Fitzroy Road be deferred for the present and, • if found convenient, the work be ineluded in that to be undertaken by the unemployment committee. 1 R. T. McQuade asked that a clay bank next to his residence at the corner of 1 Standish and Downe Street be removed r to enable him to make a road into the ’ -section so that he could build a motor shed. —Mr. McQuade will be informed s that the Council cannot see its way to ' accede to the request.
