CHEAP GERMAN GOODS.
CATALOGUES IN AUSTRALIA. Australian manufacturers have been caused a good deal of perturbation by the German catalogues which are now entering the country, and are wondering what they will have to contend with, when the door to German trade is opened on August 1. A bread machine is marked at lid, and a small stove (certainly very sinall) at the ridiculous price of 3d. A beautifully made carpenter’s plane, which would probably fetch 40s in Australia to-day and 25s in England, is priced at ss. It includes several sets of blades. A street arc lamp is invoiced at 10s, the world’s price is £2 2s. A milling machine, such as can be splendidly made at the Lithgow Smail Arms Factory at about £230, which is £lO or £2O below world price, is marked at the absurd price of £7O. A circular saw for cutting steel and having an extra supply of 125 new teeth, fetches at least £7 10s anywhere, but in Germany is £2 10s. - Pianos are marked at from £l7 to £2O. They cannot be sold in England or America to-day at less than £4O. The German will also probably enter this country with reliable motor-cars. Before the war one partic liar make cost £650 in Germany. To-day the same ears are invoiced abroad at £4OO. The list is a long one, and makes the most alarming reading for the Australian merchant. Clinical thermometers have been invoiced abroad at Id. Their i price here is at least 5s 6d. Tennis I racquets of the best make are up for I sale to retailers at 6s. Tooth-paste at ;Is 5d per dozen tubes, toilet cream at 2d less, a nickel razor at 4d, silk neckties 4£d, are also included in the range of importations.
