WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) July 6. Owing to the death of Mr. Renbie a vacancy has occurred on the borough council, and nominations are being called to fill the position. Mr. H. Hayhurst has already been nominated. Mt. J. Crow has been appointed nightwatchman to guard the interests of the retailer whilst they sleepeth. Mr. Crow has already found doors of business premises left open, and no doubt the service of a nightwatchman is warranted. At St. John’s Church annual June tea, the Rev. G. H. Gavin instituted a “community sing.” He said that the soldiers iu the trenches indulged in “community sings,” they acting as a tonic and bracing them up for meeting difficulties. There is no doubt something inspiriting in a body of people singing together well known tunes. The retail price of butter in Waitara has been increased to 2s Id per lb. At the annual meeting of shareholders of the North Taranaki Dairy Company the retiring directors were re-elec-ted. The chairman Mr. Purdie), in the course of his address, explained that up to the first week in December the company manufactured butter, and then turned over to cheese, concluding that the butter market was stabilised. Unfortunately that had not been realised, and at the end of March they reverted back to the manufacture of butter. The prospects now seemed to point to butter being the best proposition for some. time. The directors were accorded a hearty 1 vote of thanks, and the chairman was voted the usual honorarium. At a special subsequently held, it was decided to amend the articles of association in order to provide that suppliers of either cream or milk hold one share for every lOOlbs of butter-fat supplied duirng the year. Mr. Purdie was again re-elected chairman. The Waitara School Committee has been advised by the Education Board that they have again written the department on the subject of relieving the congestion due to overcrowding of the school building, and it is believed something definite will shortly result. The roll number of the school has increased to the number entitling them to an extra teacher. This has been applied for. I regret to hear that Mr. W. G. Marlow is seriously ill, suffering from congestion of the lungs. Mr. J. Blair, chief engineer of Messrs. T. Borthwick’s, Waitara Works, is on a visit to the South Island.
