CAWTHRON INSTITUTE.

EULOGISED BY MAJOR BELCHER. AN EMPIRE WORK. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Nelson, Last Night. Asked by a Mail reporter to give his impressions of the Cawthron Institute, Major Belcher, head of the British Empire Exhibition Mission, said: “I have spent one of the most interesting mornings since leaving England. I think the scope of the work, as well as the actual work being carried out, is perhaps the most important scientific contribution in relation to plant life in the whole of Australasia. Dr. Tillyard, in the entomological section, and Dr. Curtis, in the mycologieal section, are themselves engaged in forms of research which may have most far-reaching conclusions from a commercial point of view and in view of the development of orchard disease throughout New Zealand. I have visited various research farms which are carrying out purely agieultural work, such as one in Victoria is carrying out, but I have seen no institute which is carrying on the same research work in relation to orchards, and I don’t know if wc have anything in England like it of the same type. The result of this research work ought really to be shown in the Empire diseases section of the exhibition, and will, I .hope; > and the exhibition itself ought to be made the occasion of an Imperial Conference in order that the work being done at Nelson can become known jn other parts of the Empire where fruit is an important commercial problem. “I can only hope,” added Major Belcher in conclusion, “that the example of Cawthron will be followed by some other New Zealand benefactors.”
