THE UNEMPLOYED.
GOVERNMENT HELP SOUGHT. MINISTER’S FEEBLE RESPONSE. / The position of the unemployed in New Plymouth was put before the Government yesterday by Mr. R. Masters, M.P., acting on behalf of Mr. S. G. Smith, MJ*. Mr. Smith was returning to New Plymouth when he obtained a copy, of the Daily News at Marton, and on reading of the serious position here he telegraphed to Mr. Masters asking him to ascertain what action the Government could take to relieve the position. Last night Mr. Smith received a telegram from Mr. Masters stating that he had placed the position before the Hon. J. G- Coates (Minister for Public Works), who stated that the Government had arranged to employ a further 160 men throughout New Zealand, a big proportion of whom would be employed in Taranaki. Speaking to a Daily News reporter, Mr. Smith said that he knew there were, at a modest estimate, 500 unemployed in Wellington and 300 in Auckland, with others in every town, so that the Government’s action in employing 160 men was merely toying with the problem.
