A PRISONER ESCAPES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellingtop, July 5. A Maori. Joe Rawiri, arrested at Raetihi on a charge of breaking and entering. escaped from custody and got away with a Lee-Enfield rifle. This he dropped, but was seen making for the Wanganui River. The police from Raurimu are searching for him. PAKAPOO APPEAL DISMISSED. Wellington, July 5. The appeals of Git Ton and Young Suey against conviction by the Magistrate, Mr. Hunt, on charges of having been concerned in the conduct of a common gaming house where a lottery of pakapoo was carried on, were dismissed to-day by the Chief Justice and Mr. Justice Hosking. It was unnecessary, said the court, to rely upon the provisions of section 7, because there was evidence of the sale of pakapoo tickets and a description of the room.
