TARANAKI COOTENTION. YESTERDAY’S GATHERING. The annual Taranaki provincial convention was held in the Whiteley Hall at New Plymouth, yesterday. The president (Mrs. M. T. Philips) presided. There was a large attendance of delegates, dll unions being represented. The following officers were present: President, Mrs. M. T. Philips (Stratford) ; secretary, Miss Patterson (Manaia); treasurer, Mrs. Jemieson (New Plymouth); presidents of unions represented—Mesdames Griffin (New Plymouth), Scott (Hawera), Andrews (Waitara), Stanners (Eltham), Lees (Okaiawa), Hallam (Aramoha); secretaries — Mesdames Dickson (New Plymouth), Lambert (Ngaere), Hansan (Manaia), Gilmore (Aramoho), and Miss Bischopp (Hawera); Mrs. Valentine, acting-secre-tary, New Plymouth; treasurers—Mesdames Hughson (Waitara), Abraham (Stratford), Clement (Normanby), and Miss Taunt (New Plymouth); delegates —Mesdames Edwards (Ngaere), Kelly (Stratford), Clements (Eltham), Bennett and Pelch (Manaia), Murray (Waitara), Green and Oldfield (Okaiawa), Goodey (Wanganui Central), Fretbey (Wanganui East), and the Misses Hodder and Ambury (New Plymouth); superintendents—peace and arbitration and backblocks work, Mrs. Gillever; home meetings, Mrs. Fischer; Maori work. Mrs. Loveridge; notable days, Mrs. X. Jones; cradle roll, Miss Ambury. Reports from unions were read telling of the good work accomplished during the past year and the number of new members enrolled. The secretary’s report was read and confirmed. It was proposed and seconded that a record of appreciation of the good work done by Miss Mayo, the district organiser, 'be sent to headquarters, she being a most successful organiser, having gained 362 new members since the March convention. It was decided to petition Parliament to have carriages for the exclusive use of women and children on the New Plymouth-Wellington railway. The president then addressed the meeting, and was followed with great interest. The five-minute speeches ’ drew quite a number of competitors. Miss Patterson, of Manaia, won the first prize, and Mrs. Goodey, of Wanganui, second prize. Owing to the indisposition of the Rev. Collins, Miss Drew kindly judged the competitors. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the tea committee, and very much appreciated. The 1923 provincial convention will be held in Hawera.

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mrs. M. T. Philips; secretary. Miss Patterson; treasurer, Mrs. W. H. Hawkins.

A vote of thanks was passed to all those who had so kindly helped to make tile convention the success it undoubtedly was. The meeting closed with the W.C.T.U. doxology.
