FREEZING WORKS STRIKE.
SETTLEMENT IMPROBABLE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, July 5. Hopes that the dispute between the freezing companies and the employees would be settled by the Arbitration Court were dispelled soon after an ap-« plication set down for hearing was called on. Mr. Cookson appeared for” the companies, but the employees were not represented. Application was made by the New Zealand Refrigerating Company that the general order of the court reducing the bonus be varied, and workers under the Canterbury freezing works and related trades award be bound by a special order reducing the bonus by 5 per cent, in case of time workers and 2% per cent, in the case of piece workers. This meant placing the reduction on a percentage basis, instead of a flat rate, the basis adopted by the court. It was agreed that the application by the Wellington Union for exclusion from the bonus be heard in Wellington . and the hearing of the combined companies’ application gone on with after hearing the companies’ side. Mr. Justice Frazer said the court would endeavour to arrive at a solution. If unable to do so the general order must stand.
