DIRECT SHIPPING.
NEW PLYMOUTH’S FUTURE. 7 LINK WITH AUSTRALIA. • 1 Direct shipping and the future before the port of New Plymouth formed the subject of a brief discussion at the meeting of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce on IMonday night (writes our correspondent). The secretary of the Taranaki Chamber wrote stating that a C. & D. liner would, be sailing froiA London about September 20, making New Plymouth a port of discharge. It was requested that as much publicity as possible should be given to the matter, and that all possible support be given to the firm responsible for despatching the steamer, that firm having asked for no guarantee of support. The. chairman said this direct shipping was a very important matter to the district, and he hoped it would be supported. While on the subject of shipping, the chairman referred to the proposed passenger vessel to go from New Plymouth to Sydney next year, as arranged by the chairman of the Taranaki Chamber (Mr. T. C. List). Members expressed the opinion that the people of Taranaki owed a. debt of thunks to Mr. List for the part he had taken in the matter, and they thought the proposed trip would be well, patronised.
The chairman said that if New Plymouth was made a commodious and safe port, all the passenger services between Australia and New Zealand should come via New Plymouth.
