THE BUILDING PROBLEM.

CHEAPER BUNGALOWS. The problem of those who are seeking to establish homes of their own is-al-ways a more or lees difficult one, and especially to those of limited financial resources- An earnest endeavor to solve this problem is at present being made by Mr. R. A. Large, who has just completed (or practically so) a very handy and compact little bungalow of four rooms and conveniences on a 30 perch section, which can be acquired, as it stands, for £B5O. The design of the dwelling is quite attractive, and the finishings of the interior are artistic, and at the same time suitable to the practical uses of everyday life. From a small verandah the main entrance opens into a nice sitting-room, about 16ft x lift, artistically papered, with a three-pane window in the front, and also a side window of artistic design. There is. an. open fireplace, and provision is made for an electric heating point. A small halL leads to the other rooms of the house, which include two bedrooms, a bathroom fitted with bath, basin and lavatory, and the kitchen- The latter and- the bathroom are match-lined throughout.. On either side of the range are spacious linen cupboards, while a built-out safe has a door opening into the kitchen. Adjoining this is a combination of scullery, and wash-house, with sink, tubs and copper fitted in. The bungalow style has been preserved throughout, all the doors being high-waisted and the window and door fittings being of oxidis9d copper. The ceilings throughout, with the exception of the bathroom and washhouse, are of fibrous plaster, neatly battened on. The bungalow is fitted with electric light and hot an<j cold water throughout. All the drainage is to a septic tank. A fiveroomed bungalow of a similar pattern would cost £975- For an additional £2O the requirements of the Government could be met in regard to weather-board-ing and flooring, for those who desired to obtain advances from the State Department. *
