AVON (STRATFORD) CLUB. THE ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Avon (Stratford) Bowling Club - was held on Thursday night, the president, Mr. J. Masters, being in the chair. There was an attbndance of seventeen members. The annual report stated, inter alia: In presenting the annual report, your committee lias pleasure in stating that the past year has been a successful one in many respects. The club has, of course, experienced the vicissitudes inevitable in the history of a new venture. We have had the misfortune to lose, mainly by removal to other parts of New Zealand, several sterling players and most useful members in other respects, but as compensation for this a number of new members are joining up, and, with their assistance combined with the vastly Lmproved form of our young players, we look forward with confidence to the success of the new season. After reviewing the results of the season’s play the report continued: Mr. Robins was, at last annual meeting, appointed sole selector. a position which he filled very capably, and tlie thanks of the club are specially due to him for his services in this arduous position. An anonymous donor presented the club with two handsome gold medals for presentation to the winners of the handicap pairs competition. This contest was a sueeess in every way, the winners being Messrs. L. M. Moss (lead) and J. C. Robins (skip), with Messrs.- F. Weston (lead) and A. R. plasters (skip) as runners-up. The championship singles was won by Mr. H. C. North, with Mr. W. A. Curteis as runner-up. Another anonymous donor presented a pair of silver buttons, and competition for these was particularly keen. The first holders (Messrs. Sturm, lead, and J. Masters, skip) succeeded in holding them against four successive cbali lenging pairs. The present holders are Messrs. Pinhey (lead) and W. A. Betts | (skip). The green, as a result of the unreunitting attention bestowed upon it by our enthusiI astie honorary green warden, continues to. improve, so much so, iu fact, that towards the end of the season its condition elicited much favorable comment from a number of visiting players. There is. of course, a good deal to. be desired, but we feel confident that the green will, in course of time, be such as no one need he ashamed of. We. as usual, owe a debt of gratitude to the ladies for their generosity in providing and dispensing afternoon tea throughout the season. We would take this opportunity of returning thanks to all the voluntary workers who have in any way contributed to the well-being and advancement of the green. The surroundings have, since closing day, received a considerable amount of attention. Much, however, remains to be done before next opening day. It is to be hoped that all the work already mapped out will be accomplished. If so the club’s property will present a tremendously improved appearance. Your committee has held seventeen meetk ings during the year. .The attendance of members has been at all times satisfactory, the affairs of the club have at all times received the most thoughtful consideration, and the imemhers of the committee have worked most harmoniously together with the sole idea of furthering the interests of the club. We would like to take this opportunity of expressing the hope that the coming season may be in all respects a successful one. This can only be accomplished by the "long-pull-and-strong-pull-and-pull-together" principle ; we feel sure this principle will be forthcoming. In moving the adoption of the retiort and balance-sheet, the president paid a tribute to the good work of the secretary (Mr. Betts). The balance-sheet was very creditable, the profit being £73 fir. Id, which was largely due to the green warden. The warden's wife had also done splendidly towards making the Reason a social success. The motion was carried. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: President. Mr. .1. Masters (reelected) ; vice-presidents, Messrs. J. C. Robins. and H. North (re-elected) ; secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. L.
