DISTRICT NEWS.
OAKURA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Oil paintings of their Majesties King George and Queen Mary have been presented to the school by the members of the school committee, who have had them v.ery neatly framed. The portrait of the Prince of Wales will shortly be added to the group. On Friday, June 23, the annual examination was held by Mr. Valentine, senior inspector. This was more than a month earlier than usual. Nevertheless the children answered very creditably. The second round-of the card contest between Surrey Hill Road and Oakura resulted in a win for the latter, who had a complete walk over in five hundred. On Thursday night the supper room of the hall was again packed with enthusiastic euchre players. These euchre parties appear to be becoming increasingly popular, and are always well attended by our neighbors from Tataraimaka. Miss C. Honeyfield secured the ladies’ prize and Mr. J. Cross the gent’s. As usual, a dance followed, and as the floor is now in excellent condition the happy throng thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Mrs. T. Huzziff has had to be removed to the New Plymouth hospital owing to severe illness. Her friends will be pleased to learn that she has taken a turn for the better, and we all hope she may soon return In renewed health and strength. Last week Mr. G. H. Bell, a local breeder of Jersey pedigree stock, visited Palmerston North in connection with agricultural business. Captain Mace left by the Rarawa on Friday night, for Auckland, where he intends spending a few days’ holiday.
