PEDIGREE FRIESIANS.

BREEDERS’ CONSIGNMENT SALE AT PAUMERSTDN. Dalgety and Co., .Ltd., Palmerston North, report having held the second annual breeders’ consignment sale of pedigree Friesians at the Mauawatu A. and P. Showgrounds on Wednesday. There was a large and representative attendance of buyers, and, while there was good competition for the females, bulls in most cases were neglected. The highest price of the day was for a. heifer bred by Mr. H. R. Green, Kairanga, and purchased for Mr. O. J. Syme, Melbourne, at 150gns., j and a bull sold on account of Messrs. H. North and Sons, Otago, was purchased by Mr. C. E. Lucas, Rewa, at 112gns. Mr. W. D. Hunt, president of the New Zealand Friesian Society, before proceedings commenced, pointed out that such sales were now only in their Infancy, apd it. would take time to instil into the minds of breeders the absolute necessity of bringing their stock forward in the very best of condition if they expected tlieun to meet competition. He pointed out that the Friesians in New Zealand were quite equal to those in South Africa, and drew attention to the fact that a. consignment of 82 head from there had been sent to the English market, and had sold at very high prices. Messrs. C. E. Robertson, a buyer, and R. C. Wallace, who acted as an inspection committee, rejected several beasts, some on account of want of •condition, and others for not being absolutely true to breed. The following lots were disposed of:— BULLS. On account of H. North and Sons, Otago, Rosevale Beets Plus Triumph, to C. E. Lucas, Rewa, 112gns. On account of D. Dickie, Lower Hutt, Friens Mercedes Scholton, to R. M. Kelly, Te Kuiti, 52gns. On account of H. R. Green, Kairanga, Domino Jessie of Oakview, to O. J. Syme, lOlgns. HEIFERS. On account of G. A. Marchant and -Sons, Cardiff, Coldstream Moss Rose, to O. J. Syme, 130gns. On account of H. E. Johnson, Hawera, Tokaora Manor Rose, C. E. Lucas, 82gns. On account of H. R. Aidworth, Siiverhope, 85gns. PEDIGREE STOCK SALE. The Manawatu Auctioneers’ Association also conducted a sale of pedigree stock. There was a fair attendance, but many animals were passed in. Following are the results of the sale:— FRIESIAN COWS. On account of Mr. M. Allpass, Konini, Konini Dutchland Startle, to Mr. R. A. Wilson, Bulls, 17gns. ; Konini Lunta, to Mr. D. Stent, Ohingaiti, 20gns.; Konini Dutchland Lunta, to Mr. R. A. Wilson, 20gns. JERSEY OGWS. On account of Mr. M. Allpass, Konini, Silvery Sea, to Mr. H. G. Lever, Tauranga, 17 gns. On account of Mr. W. Mousley, Palmerston North, Happy Maid, to Mr. F. Smith, Awapuni, 16gns. .JERSEY BULL. On account of Mr. D. M. Finnie, Westmere, Spring Meadows Silky, to Mr. C. W. Holmes, Bulls, 21gns. MR. H. H. PHILLIPS’ HERD. The above sale of pedigree Jerseys was I held on the farm, “Jersey Meadows/' Te Rehunga, on Wednesday, and attracted buyers and others interested in the breed from all parts of the Dominion. Prices were not to be compared with those of similar sales of other years, but considering the hard times, the results must be considered highly satisfactory to the vendor, especially as many of the cows were aged, although they were keenly sought after up to fair values on* account I of their show’ records and butter-fat production, the latter for preference. In some instances this- was very pronounced, certain families of good production meeting with competition all round the ring from keen judges who put production above other qualifications. The highest price for cows was paid by Mrs. Rutherford, of Alfredton, for Trenthella's Pride, at Glgns. This lady buyer also secured, other good lots, the balance being I well distributed to buyers from W’airoa, Hastings, Nelson,. Levin, Apiti, Utiku, Palmerston North, and to local buyers, who were after some of the best lots. Bulls sold up to 44 gns., this price being paid for a nice 18.months animal, Jersey Meadows Victor, going to the bid of Mr. C. Brookes, of Utiku. The balance of th©. two-year-olds made medium prices, but yearlings were not in demand, and the balance were passed in unsold. The cows averaged slightly over 38gns, per head. The sale was conducted by the Hawke’s Bay Co-op. and the Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-op. in conjunction.

MR. S. R. LANCASTER’S HERD. An important auction sale of purebred Jersey cattle was held on Friday at Mr. S. R. Lancaster’s farm, Napier Road, Palmerston North. There was a large attendance, and the prices realised were generally satisfactory, the average price for females being 56 gns. In all, 85 females and four bulls were disposed of under the hammer. The highest price realised for the hulls was 150gns., paid for a three-mionths-old animal. Another young bull brought lOOgns. The highest price paid for a cow was 169gns„ and for a heifer 145gns.
