CULTURE OF FLOWERS.
1 NEW PLYMOUTH SOCIETY, THE ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the New Plymouth Hortrcultural Society wae held last night, Mr. G. Howden presiding over a fair attendance. The report (already published) and the balance-sheet, which showed a credit of £23 2s lid, were read. The chairman, moving their adoption, said the shows held during the year were in advance of thoee of the previous year, excepting the erysanthemum show, the wet weather during the flowering period being two severe for the flowers. At the summer show the decoration classes were of a meritorious order, and stood out prominently. In the autumn show the asters, §weet peas, and dahlias were features. “We all desire to further advance the love of horticulture in our midst,” he added, “but public support is wanting, and without that support it is not possible to carry on successfully.” Thanks were due to all those who sent private exhibits to the shows. Mr. Shaw, in seconding, paid a tribute to the secretary (Mr. Taunt). The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Mr. Taunt intimated that he did not desire to continue the secretaryship. Members expressed regret that he should retire, as he had done such valuable work for the society. The election of officers resulted:— ; President: Mr. J. W. Taunt; vicepresidents, Mesdames E. J. Ellerm and R. Brewster and Mr. R. W. D. Robertson; committee, Mesdames Alexander, McGahey, Hay. Rockel, Cowling, E. Ellerm and Miss Hempton, Messrs. Davies, Fairhall, Gibson, Rea, Browne, Barthorpe, Goodacre, Ranger, Howden, Dickson, F. Moorshead, T. Giddy, Hay and Scanlon (with power to fill vacancies); auditor, Mr. H. R. Cattley. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the out-going office-bearers and to the auditor (Mr. Cattley). An honorarium was voted to Mr. Taunt as a slight appreciation of the very valuable services given as secretary. The secretaryship is to be filled byadvertising. ’A vote of thanks was accorded the Press, speakers stating that the assistance given, especially last year, was much appreciated. It was announced that the following donations had been received: Mr. W. C. Bendall, |-ton of coal; Messrs. F. Cooper, Ltd., seeds; Messrs. Duncan and Davies, plants; Mr. N. Greiner, brooch; Mr. C. C. Bas aussen, plants; Mrs. T. H. Western, silver-mounted vase; Messrs. A. Yates and Co., seeds. Additional donations in money received were: Mrs. J. Gibson, Mrs. F. G. Harvie, Miss Hempton and Mr. F. Davies (10s e&ch). A suggestion was made by Mr. Gibson that Mr. E. Maxwell, of Rahotu, be asked to give an address to the society on forestry.
