PUBLIC CONVENIENCES.
THE BROUGHAM STREET SITE. “That the resolution passed by the council on June 16, 1919, authorising the construction of public conveniences in Brougham Street and fixing the site therefor be, and the same is, hereby rescinded.” This was a notice of motion moved by the Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) at last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council, and carried after discussion. The previous resolution of the council had fixed the site for the conveniences as the centre of Brougham Street, and the Mayor’s object in seeking to rescind this resolution was in order to have them erected at the side of Brougham Street. He explained that the plane would also have to be amended and re-approved by the council. His grounds were, firstly that a building in the centre of the street would be an unnecessary risk to traffic, and secondly it would form a risk to the public who had to cross the street. The conveniences could just as well be put on the side of the street, as he had seen elsewhere in New Zealand, with the exception of Auckland.
The motion was carried, Or. Blackball desiring to have his name recorded against it, remarking that he was sure the council would come to regret its decision.
