Sangster (president) was in the chair at the annual meeting of ffiembers of the Stratford A. and P, Association, held this afternoon in the Parish Hall The pres dent, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet (as already published) said there was little to add. Various matters could be discussed, for instance, the growing of winter feed. The time was not far distant when turnips would be a fodder of the past an'd the question was what was to replace it. He advocated the making of ensilage. In a meeting like this all met on friendly ground unlike the position sometimes and the annual meetings of dairy conferences, when often the shareholders met to curse the directors. There was the question of best class of manures. These questions would be profitable to all. The position of the A. and P. was not only to run a show. The work could be greatly extended for the good of the district. The president then referred to the balahce-sheet. He trusted? the membership would be kept up, and the coming year would be even better than in the past twelve montns. He thanked the committee for the assistance given to him. The executive had done an enormous amount of work gratuitously. Mr. B. Richmond seconded.
In reply to Mr. H. Trimble, the president stated there was a loss on the guaranteed special train from Hawera on Show Day.
Mr. J. W. Boon said they were fortunate in showing a ibalanfc for the year considering the wet weather on both davs of the show.
Mr. Boon, for the sub-committee, reported on the residence on the showgrounds, * that it would be advisable to demolish it except the two front rooms. The material could be used to add leanto rooms, and that the whole place be painted and papered at a cost of £l2O. It would be inadvisable to shift it, and would cost more to re-erect. The cottage would be suitable for a caretaker’s place. It would be advisable to hold a working bee to do the work of improving that part of the grounds. That was the recommendation to the executive. The president said the incoming committee would have to go slow in the matter of finance. Things looked brighter, but times were not normal. , There was a lot of painting work to be done when they could afford it. With regard to the luncheon room, hot water should be provided and an old source of trouble ended. The motion was carried.
Messrs. A. R. H. Amess and Fryday were elected members of the Association.
ELECTION OF~ OFFICE-BEAREIIS. Mr. Boon, in moving that Mr. G. Sangster be re-elected president, spoke of the good work done by him during the past two years, and Mr. H. Hunt spoke similarly in seconding the motion, which was carried unanimously amidst applause. Me. Sangster thanked the meeting for their renewed confidence. He had intended relinquishing the position, but had been approached to allow himself to be nominated and had consented to do so.
Vice-presidents: Messrs. J. W. Boon, E. Walters, M. T. Phillips, and N. R. Cleland (Whangamomona County Chairman).
Treasurer: Mr. A. R. Masters (reelected).
Auditor: Mr. «T, H. Thompson (reelected ).
Committee: Messrs. H. Hunt, E. H. Linnell. A. R. H. Amess, R. Johnson, W. H. Rutledge, J. W. W. Pettigrew, L. Webster, M. T. Phillips, D. O’Sullivan, L. T. Aylward, G. Tlpler, B. Orr, Steer, Richmond, C. Moore, C. Marchant. J. T. Belcher, T. 'Perry, D. M. Clarke, F. Hunger, J. W. Boon, and Mills. THE COTTAGE. Messrs. Boon and Phillips had been deputed to report on the condition of the cottage on the showground. Mr. Boon moved that it be a recommendation to the in-coming committee to pull down the building, except the two front rooms, the old material to be re-used in putting on another two rooms; the land around the cottage to be redu.ced. Mr. Trimble asked if it was intended to appoint a caretaker. The chairman said paying a caretaker woiffd make a big bite in the funds. Mr. Boon said that he had remarked that the cottage would be suitable for the residence of a caretaker, but he did not suggest that a caretaker should be appointed at once. Tire motion was carried. THE OVAL. Mr. L. T. Aylward moved that the Oval be increased in size so that there would be a half-mile track. He said his motion was a result of the recent carnival. The half-mile track was held t o be desirable to encourage the, sport of trotting. The last carnival had helped the Association greatly last year. If it was an annual event it would greatly increase the number of townspeople interested in the Association. Mr. Linnell thought the Oval could be greatly enlarged without too much shifting of the buildings. The Association had the first leg in, but since the carnival there had been a movement among other people to hold trots. If the Association made what it did on a wet day what would they not do on a fine day? Mr. Aylward said every endeavor should be made to secure control of trotting. There was more demand for the sport of trotting in the district than members probably imagined. Mr. Phillips: Then farmers will breed racers and not Jerseys.
Mr. H. A Hunt said if the Gval was enlarged it would be a great advantage in dealing with the horse section at the abow.
It was decided‘‘to recommend the committee to take into consideration the enlarging of the Oval, the reference to the half-mile track being deleted. SUGGESTED CLASSES. M. A. H. R. Amess, director of the Stratford Technical High School, suggested that during the September holidays classes for farmers be held at the school, when chemical work could be done in the school’s laboratories. It was decided that the committee should go into the matter.
